Preschool Vision Screening

Early childhood vision screenings are essential for the prevention of eye conditions, which, if undetected, may lead to permanent sight impairment. A common childhood visual problem such as amblyopia (lazy eye), if left untreated, can cause permanent vision loss.

Young children are the least able to communicate a vision problem. Not knowing what normal eyesight is, they may compensate for vision loss until it is too late to treat.  Even parents and teachers may not notice a vision problem, which is why early childhood vision screenings are so important.

As crucial as they are, vision screenings are not readily available to some young children. Screenings are not routinely provided in pre-schools or childcare centers, and many parents do not have access to or choose not to avail themselves of preventative health care.   The need for vision screenings and eye-care information is even greater for children of low-income families. We take our program to state pre-schools¹, child development centers, and other pre-schools serving low-income families where we can reach children that would have no other means of receiving this service.

When vision problems are detected in the screening, we provide follow-up to assure that the child receives the necessary vision care from a physician. When financial resources are needed, we work with families to locate low-cost or free services.

The follow-up that takes place after the screening is the key to prevention. Any abnormality that is detected during the screening is referred for further examination by a physician. It is vital that immediate steps are taken for follow-up with parents and guardians. Often it can take several phone calls to make contact, make sure that the parent understands the need for a doctor’s visit and that the necessary resources are given to preserve sight.
