Professional Education & Training

Board members and Program staff of Prevent Blindness Northern California have provided professional education since the organization’s inception in 1966.

 Since 1990, 234 ongoing professional education workshops in screening and detecting children’s vision problems have been provided for more than 5,500 health professionals.  The various agencies we train include, the California State Child Health and Disability Prevention Program (CHDP), Head Start and Migrant Head Start staff, Indian Health Services, First Five Programs, School Nurses, the Archdiocese of San Francisco, and others responsible for providing vision screening services for young children. Prevent Blindness Northern California is registered with the Board of Registered Nurses as a continuing education provider and provides ongoing educational classes.

During 2006, the Program staff of Prevent Blindness Northern California provided professional training for 545 health professionals from the State of California’s Child Health and Disability Prevention Program and Head Start workers in children’s vision problems and vision screening. This training allowed them to provide vision screenings to 75,000 children this year, which is in addition to our own current Preschool Vision Screening program.

Our highly acclaimed Education and Training program is much sought after within the Northern California communities.  We have conducted seminars for Industrial Hygienists, Certified Safety Professionals, and Occupational Health Nurses regarding Eye Safety in Industry in conjunction with Cal/OSHA and Stanford University School of Medicine.   Home and Garden Eye Safety and Prevention of Eye Injuries presentations have been provided for the general public as well as the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses.  PBNC also trains and recertifies every 3-years it core of approximately 500 volunteers to administer adult and vision screenings throughout Northern California.

We offer courses for continuing education credits for nurses on children's vision problems and vision screening.   The services of Prevent Blindness Northern California are free-of-charge* *exceptions include bulk order publications, professional education classes, staffing corporate events, and certain fee-for-service screenings.
